Reflection and Review
As the New Year approaches, it is an opportunity to reflect and reassess your day to day life. Whilst we often reflect during holidays or life changes throughout the year, this becomes more notable as the New Year approaches when everyone is encouraged to make resolutions.
Are there any you are considering?
Are you following your passions?
Are you exercising? socialising? practising self care?
With these questions in mind, it’s important to recognise how our routines shift during the holidays and we have more time. This extra time can make it easier to start habits, however maintaining them when your day-to-day life returns to normal is challenging. This is why I never start on January 1st but either 2 weeks before or after.
I gave up smoking on Monday January 18th 1999. The first 6 months were the most challenging. However, it was a decision I have never regretted. Indeed, as one good thing leads to another it was to herald the start of a series of changes, that changed my lifestyle priorities for the better.
5 of which are still part of my daily lifestyle today, and all of these have been aided by making small daily habits and choices that work together to form a healthier way of life in line with my own personal priorities.
- Family 1st and Fun. Both non-negotiable essentials. A day without laughter is a day wasted in my opinion and who better to spend it with.
- Daily Exercise/activity to optimise my health, fitness and wellbeing. Always time well spent and helps me deal with life’s challenges.
- Pursuing hobbies/continual personal development gives me that sense of achievement and takes me out of my comfort zone.
- Eating clean with mindful indulgence. Like most I love food and am very occasionally, not so mindful, but I quickly readdress as know my body feels better when I eat optimally.
You will all have your own priority areas which you wish to reflect, reassess and make change to. This may seem hard to identify, or to identify the healthy way of making new habits to help you. Small steps are essential to long term success.
